Practice Gap/Need and Course Description:

This presentation will tackle the important and yet illusive concept of truth. After briefly discussing the various theoretical approaches, it will be asserted that truth comes in many forms. Seven such forms will be identified; these include physical truth, historical truth, narrative truth, poetic truth, manufactured truth, legal truth, and existential truth. The clinical relevance of these categories will be highlighted with the help of brief vignettes from the presenter’s analytic practice.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Enumerate seven types of truth.

2. Utilize this knowledge to improve clinical skills and recognize multiple perspectives on patients’ symptoms and personality.
