The Early Admissions Program (EAP) is designed to provide an educational experience for those interested in psychoanalytic training, but not yet ready for full training. Seminars are taught by senior psychoanalysts who focus on central psychoanalytic ideas that are clarified through clinical examples. The seminars take place at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute on Saturdays from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. (32841 Middlebelt Road in Farmington Hills). Distance learning options are available for those unable to attend in person. Students participate from all parts of the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
The program is open to residents in psychiatry, psychology graduate students, and mental health professionals who may have already graduated their core professional training. Students and graduates of other academic disciplines are also accepted as Early Admission Academics. Academic candidates who wish to obtain full clinical training must obtain a mental health degree (with licensure).
Students may join this program at any time during the academic year. Attendees of the EAP include auditors, guests and candidates. Those students who wish to audit classes in the EAP need to contact the Chair and receive permission to attend. They can then attend classes for free during that entire academic year. To attend classes during the following academic year, they would sign up formally with MPI and notify the Chair. They would then be considered as EAP guests and tuition is $380/year. The length of time an individual attends as a “guest” prior to applying to be an EAP candidate is determined in consultation with the Chair of EAP.
Progression from an EAP Candidate to full time candidacy is decided on when the candidate is deemed sufficiently prepared by the Candidate Progression Committee of MPI. Preparation for full clinical training will involve gaining psychoanalytic psychotherapy experience seeing patients at least 2-3 times weekly while being supervised by a psychoanalyst. Academic Candidacy requires sufficient exposure to psychoanalytic principles and theory. In some cases, students may be advised to complete other MPI programs before or in conjunction with becoming Early Admission Candidates. For some candidates, one year in EA is sufficient; others may be better served by remaining in EA status for two to three years.
Early Admission Candidates have advisors and are members of the Candidates’ Organization of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Guests have no treatment requirement although it is highly recommended. Early Admission candidates must be in treatment with a psychoanalyst. If the analyst is not a Training Analyst, the candidate will eventually need to be in analysis with a Training Analyst six months prior to starting classes as a fully matriculated candidate at MPI.
