As a useful guide to filling out the application, please review the following categories specified by the
MPS by-laws. Please indicate the membership category that is most appropriate for you. If you have

Michigan Psychoanalytic Society Membership Categories


Academic Membership – open to academic graduates of an institute recognized by the American
Psychoanalytic Association or the International Psychoanalytic Association, or Active Member of the
American Psychoanalytic Association.
Active Membership – open to graduates of an institute recognized by the American Psychoanalytic
Association or the International Psychoanalytic Association, or an Active Member of the American
Psychoanalytic Association.
Adjunct Membership – open to former candidates of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute who have
successfully completed their didactic courses.
Affiliate Membership – open to candidates of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute at the time of their
acceptance. It remains in effect as long as the candidate retains candidate status in the Institute.
Associate Membership – open to individuals in allied disciplines who have had training generally
received by graduates on an approved psychoanalytic institute.
Psychotherapist Membership – open to individuals who have advanced post-graduate training in and
substantial clinical commitment to psychoanalytic psychotherapy practice as demonstrated by specific
criteria.
Psychotherapy Program Affiliate Membership – open to all psychotherapy program students
currently enrolled in MPI psychotherapy fellowships, ATAPP, CDCIP, or one-year long tracts in ATAPP,
CDCIP programs. This category also includes those graduates of the above programs who are nonmental health professionals or are not psychotherapists but wish to subscribe to Pep-Web and includes
annual symposium fee.
Student Resident Membership – open to students in graduate training within a mental health discipline
or other fields, residents in psychiatry and undergraduate students.
Community Membership – open to any member of the community from a non-mental health
background interested in the study of psychoanalysis and in the application of psychoanalytic principles
to a wide body of knowledge, e.g. literature, film, music, art and societal issues.
Honorary Membership – open to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to
psychoanalysis.
Life Membership – open to Active, Adjunct and Associate Members who have attained the age of
seventy, or have completed a period of thirty years of membership of the Society, or are Life Members
of the American Psychoanalytic Association and have been a member of the Society for a minimum of 5
Years.
