Though the Broadway play won the Drama prize, it is a contemporary musical with 30 original songs. It won the 2009 Tony Awards for Best Original Score as well as Best Orchestration and Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.
The plot involves a family otherwise normal in the throes of coping with mental illness and trauma. The music is very powerful. From the NY Times Review by Ben Brantley, published 4/15/09, "No show on Broadway right now makes as direct a grab for the heart — or wrings it as thoroughly — as “Next to Normal” does. This brave, breathtaking musical, which opened Wednesday night at the Booth Theater, focuses squarely on the pain that cripples the members of a suburban family, and never for a minute does it let you escape the anguish at the core of their lives."
