Reel Deal IV - The Sessions
Sunday, May 5, 2013
1:00 – 3:00 PM
Bloomfield Twp. Library, corner of Telegraph & Lone Pine Rd.
Director’s Chair: Brian Murphy, Ph.D.
Psychoanalyst: Susan Orbach, Ph.D.
Practice Gap /Need and Course Description: Disabled people remain marginalized in a society that privileges physical perfection. Psychotherapists have little opportunity to work with large numbers of disabled patients and remain influenced by biases. The Sessions is a unique film which deals poignantly with one man’s struggle for sexual and emotional fulfillment despite debilitating obstacles. This two hour program will provide a film analysis and a psychoanalytic exploration of issues raised in this thought provoking film. Small group discussions will be used to facilitate the Q and A. At the end of this program, participants will be able to DEMONSTRATE:
1. Understanding of the way that distortions in body image can challenge the ability to connect within oneself and with the external adult world.
2. Appreciation of the crucial role of relationships (both therapeutic and otherwise) in an individual’s sense of agency and mastery.
3. Awareness of transference/countertransference enactments that impede the ability to interact with individuals struggling with disabilities.
