This course will examine the major contemporary psychodynamic theorist's conception of leadership within organizations. In what ways does a leader's individual psychology and narcissism significantly influence and impact the strategic direction and functioning of an organization? To what extent does a leader's unconscious thoughts and fantasies both successfully "drive" an organization and also result in irrational behavior? What is the corresponding psychodynamic group response to the leader and organizational defenses that ensue?
After attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Examine several contemporary models that address the unique concerns and challenges of leaders and psychoanalytic interventions designed to assist both the leader and the organization.
- Describe the impact of how a leader's personality influences leadership style and organizational culture.
- Assess the various manifestations of a leader's narcissism and how this impacts organizational culture, structure and growth-both in productive and unproductive ways.
