A group of Institute and Society members has formed close working relationships with leaders from the metro area’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities, including PFLAG , the Triangle Foundation, and Affirmations Community Center . In the past year, the committee has co-sponsored two public events with other prominent community organizations, and is interested in arranging others. In a collaborative effort with the Early Childhood Development Committee, the GLBT Network has developed a program especially for gay and lesbian parents.

The Network has added two courses to the Continuing Education Division schedule intended to familiarize the mental health community with the special issues needing attention in working with patients from this population.  There is also a study group for interested professionals which meets monthly in Birmingham.  For information about joining the group, please contact Dr. Don Spivak at (248) 540-7007.   

The Network welcomes opportunities to work with other organizations to identify mental health-related needs of the gay and lesbian community and to develop programs to address those needs.  

Mental health professionals wishing to become part of the GLBT Network, or community groups wishing to arrange activities or referrals through the Network should contact the coordinator .
