Ann Arbor Community Outreach

The Ann Arbor Development Committee works to promote the visibility and availability of psychoanalytic understanding locally among both professionals and the broader community. We help sponsor and promote Ann Arbor analytic presentations by our Society, APT, the Foundation, the Professional Educators Program, the Continuing Education Division, and other parts of our organizations. The local Student and Trainees Association is also very active in outreach to local mental health trainees. An Ann Arbor Winter Gathering is our local office brought together colleagues from throughout our analytic organizations in a social setting.

In response to the tragedy of September 11, we organized workshops for local mental health professionals to consider how these events affected us as well as our patients, and how we might best serve our patients under conditions of such uncertainly and distress.

The Ann Arbor Development Committee seeks to develop new forums for analytic presentations and discussions. Our committee has created community analytic programs with the U-M School of Music, the U-M Center for Russian and East European Studies, and Washtenaw Community College, as well as hosting open houses for students and the community. We also partnered with a well-known local menswear store for a widely publicized Foundation Benefit Sale Day, which has launched an annual tradition. Through our public information efforts, our Institute and psychoanalysis were featured in articles in both major local newspapers this year. We also sponsored a series of informational announcements about the Institute on local public radio.

We began some outreach to take analytic talks on site to the business community, with an initial series of talks tailored to employees’ requests and concerns. Another community outreach in the planning stages is a discussion series cosponsored with a local humanities bookshop, featuring analysts discussing works with visiting authors or topics of mental health interest. In all venues, we make information available about our organizations and our Treatment Clinic.
