Michigan Psychoanalytic Society Supports Gay and Lesbian Parenting

The American Psychoanalytic Association formally adopted a Position Statement on Gay and Lesbian Parenting on May 16, 2002, becoming one of a growing number of professional organizations to do so. On October 3, members of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Society met to discuss a recent request by the Coalition for Adoption Rights Equality  for our support of their advocacy efforts.  Dr. Ivan Sherick, an Ann Arbor psychoanalyst, prepared a review of the empirical literature on gay parenting for the American's consideration, and he graciously agreed to present the report for our local review.  At the conclusion of the meeting, the members voted to accept the position statement of the American without amendment.  A summary of Dr. Sherick's presentation is available here.
