Admission for Full Psychoanalytic Training

The Admissions Committee of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute is now accepting applications for fall 2007.

We encourage and welcome interested and qualified professionals to apply for admission to full training in child and adult psychoanalysis.  Our admissions criteria are in keeping with the standards for training established by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association, of which the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute is a fully accredited member.

The Admissions Committee welcomes applicants from the major mental health fields, including psychiatry, clinical psychology, and clinical social work.  The training requirements for each field are as follows:

1.  Medical Applicants:  The applicant shall have an M.D. or D.O. from a medical school accredited by the A.M.A. or A.O.A.  A program of psychiatric training is required, one which provides experience with inpatients as well as outpatients in diagnostic categories which include psychosis, neurosis and character disorders.  Supervised experience in providing intensive psychotherapy is essential.  Experience in providing psychotherapy with children and adolescents is desirable.

2.  Clinical Psychology Applicants:  The applicant shall have been granted a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology from a program accredited by The American Psychological Association.  Supervised experience in providing intensive, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy is a required prerequisite for acceptance for psychoanalytic training at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.  Inpatient and outpatient work and work with patients in diagnostic categories, which include psychoses, neuroses and character disorders is desirable, as is psychotherapy with children and adolescents.

3.  Clinical Social Work Applicants:  Applicants who have been granted a Ph.D. or D.S.W. in Social Work from an accredited school of Social Work will be evaluated on the same basis as other applicants with doctoral degrees.  Significant post-doctoral clinical work and supervised experience in intensive, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy is required.  Inpatient and outpatient work and work with patients in diagnostic categories, which include psychoses, neuroses and character disorders is desirable, as is psychotherapy with children and adolescents.

Applicants with an M.S.W. in Social Work will also be considered for candidacy.  We expect the M.S.W. applicant to have had considerable post Masters clinical experience in intensive, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy under supervision, with the range of patients noted above.  In addition, we would expect demonstration of significant formal post Masters educational experiences within a psychoanalytic framework for understanding various aspects of psychological functioning, and clinical technique.

4.  Applicants With Other Credentials:  The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute has the option to request a waiver of the usual minimal educational requirements for admission for full clinical training.  Such waivers may be granted by the Board on Professional Standards (BOPS) of The American Psychoanalytic Association.  The Board has developed guidelines for admission in special cases for applicants who meet the following criteria:

A) Academicians engaged in research, scholarly careers or teaching whose work would be significantly enhanced by full training in psychoanalysis.  A waiver of the usual training requirements for such applicants selected by the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute may be granted by the Committee on Research and Special Training (CORST) of The American Psychoanalytic Association.  The granting of a waiver enables the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute to offer the applicant full clinical training, including the requirement that the candidate be in analysis with a Training Analyst of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

B) Clinicians who either do not have a doctoral degree or whose degree or training are not in the categories listed above (e.g., M.D. with pediatric and not psychiatric residency training).  Such applicants must demonstrate clinical ability and show that they have supplemented their educational credentials with formal training and/or scholarly or clinical research activities so that their training and experience is at a level with those applicants whose credentials meet the stated criteria described above.

The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute does not consider applicants who would not qualify for a waiver of the usual requirements for admission by The American Psychoanalytic Association.  Applicants whose background in clinical work or whose education is not adequate will be required to supplement their preparation before applying for full training.

Because of the complexity of some applicants' circumstances, some questions can only be answered on an individual basis.  Inquiries are welcomed and encouraged.  Potential applicants or anyone seeking information or clarification about the admissions requirements or procedures of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute should direct their inquiries to the Chairman of the Admissions Committee, Dr. Melvin Bornstein, at (348) 642-3343.

Personal Suitability:  The applicant must present evidence of integrity of character, maturity of personality and reasonable likelihood of analyzability.  Evaluation of the capacity for psychoanalytic education will be carried out through interviews with members of the Faculty.  If accepted for training, the candidate will be required to undergo a personal analysis (preferably five, minimum four times per week) with a Training Analyst of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.  It is required that the candidate be in this analysis at least six to eight months before beginning seminars, though a year or more is usual.  This analysis is primarily a therapeutic procedure to resolve neurotic conflicts and achieve a level of mental health consistent with the practice of psychoanalysis.  Fees for this analytic treatment will be arranged by the individual candidate and his/her analyst.  At the present time, each Training Analyst is restricted from having more than five candidates in analysis at any one time.

Admission Procedure:  Applications should be submitted to the Administrative Director of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.  In order to assure acceptance for the fall semester, completed applications need to be received by February 1st.  A fee of $250 must accompany the application when submitted.  Should a waiver application be necessary, a supplemental $150 fee will be assessed.  The fee is non-refundable after the processing of the application has begun.  Those with educational backgrounds other than the ones listed above need to receive a waiver for training from The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA).  For approval at the winter meetings of APsaA, completed applications must be received by May 1st.  For approval at the spring meetings of APsaA, completed applications must be received by December 1st.  It is strongly recommended that those needing a waiver apply by the May 1st deadline, so that adequate pre-matriculation preparation may be undertaken if necessary.

The applicant's suitability will be determined by the Admissions Committee on the basis of the written application, letters of recommendation, transcripts of previous education experience, and interviews by members of the Faculty.  The decision regarding acceptance is made by the Educational Committee.  Applicants will be notified of the decision of the Educational Committee as soon as possible.

The Institute has always maintained a non-discriminatory policy; i.e., candidates are accepted solely on the basis of their education, characterological and psychological suitability for the practice of psychoanalysis.

Application For Transfer:  Application for transfer to this Institute will be considered, if the applicant is a regularly enrolled candidate in good standing in an Institute approved by The American Psychoanalytic Association.  The applicant shall give satisfactory evidence of training and understanding suitable to the status for which he/she applied.  Those applying must complete the usual application form and go through the usual application procedure.
