Contemporary therapists recognize that incest is not rare but even a common clinical finding to working with the full range of neurotic, borderline, and psychotic disorders. Such patients have experienced betrayal and sexual trauma; the clinician must face special challenges in establishing hope, safety, and in understanding sado-masochistic enactments.

The course will be based on the study of clinical cases of incest with follow-up data written by Gabbard, Twemlow, Fonagy, Silber, Dewald, et. al. Most of these cutting edge reports have not previously been published. We will also devote attention to the recent literature on the Oedipus complex, the bedrock concept that is central to most psychoanalytic theories.
