Countertransference Reactions: An Essential Tool for the Therapist

In the not-so-distant past, the therapist’s strong emotional reactions to patients were seen as evidence of neurosis that demanded further analysis. In contemporary psychoanalysis, we view such reactions as not only ubiquitous in clinical work but as an essential tool for understanding our patients. In this course, we will read some seminal recent contributions on countertransference, including papers by Ted Jacobs, Owen Renik and Judith Chused. The course will be clinical in focus. We will use clinical material presented by the instructor and participants to explore how countertransference reactions arise in the clinical setting and how they can be addressed constructively to enhance our work with our patients.
