David Lundin, M.A., L.L.P., L.P.C.

Psychoanalysis and film were born close to the same time just over a century ago and, although Freud himself was not a fan, the two remain intricately interwoven.  Both reveal and interpret the deepest recesses of the human soul and enrich each other when understood to their full potential.

This course explores the interaction between film and psychoanalysis from a fundamental standpoint, unplugged as it were.  Various psychoanalytic perspectives on film will be discussed, combined with basic film theory to create a richer movie viewing experience.

Film theory concepts to be explored include “the shot,” the mis en scene, editing, montage, the role of the spectator, the narrative, diegesis and genre.  Psychoanalytically, Glen Gabbard’s seven methods of viewing films from this perspective will be discussed, including film as dream material and as unconscious cultural conflict.  Films will include those from classic directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Pedro Almodovar, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen.
