About Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a method of treatment based on the idea that self-understanding leads to relief of painful and distressing feelings and behavior. Often a person tries to resolve difficulties in life by seeking advice, by exerting will power, or by altering his or her life circumstances to avoid painful feelings--yet with little success. Psychoanalysis is based on the idea that past experiences often interfere with current life, causing painful, constricting, and repetitive patterns of behavior, creative blocks, unhappy relationships, work problems, sexual difficulties, or an inability to appreciate oneself and others.

The goal of psychoanalysis is to achieve freedom from painful, recurring feelings and conflicts, and live to one's fullest potential. As the patient talks freely in a setting of consistency and safety, repetitive patterns of behavior appear in the way the patient talks, behaves, and relates to the analyst. When these patterns are experienced, observed, and understood in this process of self-discovery, a person learns about new ways to master old problems, resulting in expanded freedom to work, love, and play. Psychoanalysis is conducted four or five times a week, over a period of several years. For more information about psychoanalysis, click here.

About Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a form of therapy which uses the principles of psychoanalysis. In general, both its goals and its outcome are more focused than those of analysis. Patient and therapist meet somewhat less frequently but on an open-ended basis.

Which treatment is best?
A decision on which treatment is best--psychoanalysis or psychotherapy--is based on what is the most effective and feasible treatment for the patient at any given time.

Who provides treatment?
Psychoanalysis is conducted by candidates, who are analysts in training at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. They are experienced mental health professionals in psychiatry, psychology, and social work who are currently in the most rigorous postgraduate training program available in mental health. They conduct analysis with faculty supervision, and treat patients in their private offices throughout the Detroit Metro and Ann Arbor areas.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is provided by candidates, graduate analysts, professionals affiliated with MPI, and by members of our TC clinical staff who are experienced, licensed professionals who have the consultation resources of faculty analysts available as needed. Treatment clinic staff clinicians conduct therapy in our conveniently located Farmington Hills or Ann Arbor offices.

What does it cost?
Fees are individually arranged based on ability to pay.
