Non-Clinical Psychoanalytic Training

The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute offers several programs for those interested in various levels of academic training in psychoanalysis.  This collaboration contributes to the mutual enrichment of psychoanalysis and other scholarly fields.

The Academic Fellowship Program offers a one-year (renewable to two) honorary opportunity for those established scholars interested in achieving a bridge between psychoanalysis and their own field of scholarship. The Fellow will have the opportunity to meet with a psychoanalyst mentor to further this goal.

The Academic Candidate Program offers interested scientists, scholars, educators, administrators and other professionals in diverse areas the opportunity for systematic study of and immersion in psychoanalytic ideas.  Academic Candidates are expected to be in a personal psychoanalysis with an analyst certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association and to pursue the same sequence of courses as the clinical candidates.  In addition, for graduation, they are expected to write a paper demonstrating the integration of their interest with the psychoanalytic knowledge derived from their studies.

Full psychoanalytic training is offered to those scholars and researchers interested in clinical training. This program requires a waiver from the Committee on Research and Special Training (CORST) of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The CORST Candidate is expected to be in a personal psychoanalysis with a Training Analyst and to complete all of the requirements of the usual clinical training.

Indiividuals interested in these possibilities should contact Dr. Deanna Holtzman, Chair of the Psychoanalytic Academic Programs Committee at (248) 642-7510; or to request an application form, write to:
